A hapless electronics store employee who spends most of his spare time downing pints at the local pub with his roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun's life seems to fall apart when he is dumped by his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), and his obnoxious stepfather, Philip (Bill Nighy), shows up to berate him for not being more attentive to his caring mother Barbara (Penelope Wilton) -- especially since he forgot to send flowers for her birthday. Things take a turn for the worse when the dead return to stake their claim on the Earth, and though the chaos that follows threatens to swallow up all of England, it's up to Shaun to keep his cool and prove himself once and for all by successfully rescuing Liz and his mother. With his trusty roommate by his side, nothing -- not even the living dead -- can stand between Shaun and the two most important women in his life. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Movie Release on Theater Sep 24, 2004 Wide

Shaun of the Dead Movie Review
The cast make a cosy fit, the patter is still sitcom snappy, but Wright also has the visual snap to carry this saga of backyard apocalypse. Derek Adams-Time Out For those who don't mind a little laughter with their zombies (or perhaps it should be the other way around), this is an unusual source of entertainment. James Berardinelli-ReelViews ...the second half of the film is just a standard horror movie showdown with a few mildly amusing gags. Richard Roeper-Ebert & Roeper The movie has been running on shtick for so long that the attempt at drama rings hollow. J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader Wonderfully original, fast-moving and funny. Desson Thomson-Washington Post If the zombie genre steadfastly refuses to die, we can be grateful to Shaun of the Dead for breathing fresh, diverting life into the form, with subtle visual humor and a smart, impish sense of fun. Ann Hornaday-Washington Post Like Romero's best efforts, the movie is motored by a keen observational reality, cleverly twisting the characters' mundane world inch by inch until the real nightmare dawns on them. -Total Film Some funny moments, but for adults only. Common Sense Media Editors-Common Sense Media Pedestrian direction and script sap what anarchic fun this movie could've been Jay Antani-Cinema Writer Shaun of the Dead is not only one of the single best zombie movies ever made, but it's also as close to perfect as a film can get. Steve "Uncle Creepy" Barton-Dread Central A modern masterpiece, this is probably altogether the funniest and scariest film I've seen in years... Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed Comedy and horror are real life partners, of course, and who better to bring all this to life in a zombie movie than the Brits? Urban Cinefile Critics-Urban Cinefile Extremely well made but only sporadically engaging... David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews I think the movie is one of the most hilarious I've ever seen ... But the symbolism and depth of the movie make me appreciate it as a masterpiece. Christopher Campbell-Cinematical In this most apocalyptic of genres, Shaun of the Dead is not unlike a ray of unexpected sunshine - even if it has a little red on it. Rob Humanick-Projection Booth ...not only a loving, teasing homage to the Romero Dead films. It's also a superb zombie film in its own right... Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com A romantic zombie comedy that tips its hat to George Romero and mines one very funny spoof that doesn't ignore the rules of the zombie horror genre--though it does tamper with them. Christopher Smith-Bangor Daily News (Maine) Shaun is able to balance the comedy and the gore in a way that will satisfy both zombie genre fans and less bloodthirsty viewers. Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound Even when in danger of self-destructing, it cadges laughs with smart lines, silly observations or blokish inside jokes about zombie movies, video games and pub nibbles. Kim Newman-Empire Magazine The Office meets Annie Hall meets Night of the Living Dead. Alex Sandell-Juicy Cerebellum Silly drop-dead sight gags that don't seem to work as well as intended but, nevertheless, offer some humor. Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews Co-written by director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg, this gory zombie satire is filled to the brim with charming English wit. Jason Zingale-Bullz-Eye.com Writer-director Edgar Wright and co-writer and star Simon Pegg have terrific fun riffing on zombie lore. Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema What a sheer delight that we now have a romantic comedy that puts false hope where it belongs: in the face of the annihilation of the entire human race. Brian Juergens-Freeze Dried Movies This is played for laughs, but director Edgar Wright also builds up suspense and dread better than a lot of straight horror flicks Kevin N.
